Strategic Focus of the New Zealand Teachers Council
The New Zealand Teachers Council strategic focus is targeted towards key entry points into the profession. There are three key stages in a teacher's pathway leading from student teacher status to full registration as a teacher. These entry points are highlighted in the diagram below, which provides clickable links to the relevant section of the website for each. Information on the requirements for teachers to move through to the next entry level can be found in each section.
As shown in the diagram, the three entry points can be described as follows:
- Entry 1: Entry into an approved ITE programme
- Entry 2: Graduation from an approved ITE programme and granting of Provisional Registration
- Entry 3: Following a minimum period of two years induction and mentoring, the granting of full registration
- Ongoing: The holding of a current practising certificate is a requirement for employment as a teacher in New Zealand
The NZ Teachers Council's strategic professional projects are targeted towards assisting teachers reach and pass through each entry point into the next level of their career as a teacher in New Zealand.
