Glossary of terms used in New Zealand Teachers Council documents.
Provisional registration
- for an applicant who does not provide evidence of professional support and appraisal as a beginning teacher for a full two years following completion of a recognised teacher education programme.
Registration subject to confirmation
- for a teacher who provides evidence of professional support and appraisal as a beginning teacher for a full two years following completion of a recognised teacher education programme. Verification of the dates of employment and an outline of the system of professional support and appraisal from the school or employing authority needs to be submitted to the NZ Teachers Council. This will normally have been a process of induction into the teaching profession by a mentor teacher involving supervision, guidance and appraisal. Cyclic appraisals which are applicable to all teachers in a school are not sufficient for this purpose.
-
for a teacher who has previously been registered subject to confirmation.
-
for a teacher who has previously held full registration and who is unable to meet the practising certificate renewal requirements.
This category of registration enables a teacher to be considered for a move to full registration after a minimum of three months continuous supervised teaching in a New Zealand school.
Full registration
- for a teacher who has, within the past five years, satisfactorily completed two years employment as a teacher in New Zealand.
- a teacher who applies for registration in New Zealand for the first time and who provides evidence of holding current full teacher registration granted by an Australian registration authority will be considered for full registration in New Zealand under the provisions of the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997. There is no provision under the Education Act 1989 for a teacher to achieve full registration in New Zealand on the basis of overseas teaching experience.
