Election 2011

The New Zealand Teachers Council (the Council) is amending Rule 5 (3) of the Council's Election Rules 2002 to extend the timeframe, from 120 to 180 days of an elected person's term expiring, as the timeframe in which a by-election would be held. The proposed change recognises the significant cost and time involved in holding a by-election and will enable any new member to make a meaningful contribution to the Council, on behalf of their sector, prior to their term expiring.

In March 2011 the Council wrote to representatives from key stakeholder groups outlining the proposed change and inviting their feedback. A notice was also published in the 28 March 2011 edition of the Education Gazette. The Council received five responses, all from sector groups. These responses all supported the proposed change.
