Non Teacher Police Vetting
Non Teacher Police Vetting Changes
The New Zealand Teachers Council is no longer responsible for the Non Teacher Police Vetting process for schools and early childhood education services.
All vetting will now be done directly through the New Zealand Police. Inspector Joe Green has drafted a letter (pdf 120KB) explaining their new process.
Any applications received by the Teachers Council on or after enactment on 20 May 2010 will be sent back to the vet requestor. We will be sending a communication to all providers on Friday 21 May 2010.
Those employed in a teaching position will still be vetted through their application for a practising certificate or Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) so they do not need to be separately vetted.
The Ministry of Education has published a circular on Non Teacher Police Vetting on their website.
Other implications of the Education Amendment Act
The Act authorises an information matching programme between the New Zealand Teachers Council and Ministry of Education for those employed in a teaching position.
Boards are still responsible for ensuring all those they employ in a teaching position have a current practising certificate or authorisation to teach. Those employed in teaching positions who do not hold a current practising certificate or authorisation are required to obtain one.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner monitors the process used by the Ministry and the Teachers Council. Their role is to make sure that the privacy of individuals is protected and that information matching is managed properly by both organisations.
