Māori Medium Research

This research programme has involved an environmental scan of Māori medium ITE programmes conducted by Haemata Ltd., and a second stage literature review of national and international reserach.

In 2006, the Council conducted a telephone survey of Tumuaki of a sample of Kura Kaupapa Māori to investigate issues relating to registration of pouako.  The results have been published as a Council occasional paper.

Tātaiako is a resource explaining competencies teachers need to develop so they can help Māori learners achieve educationally as Māori.  It was developed by the Ministry of Education, Te Pouherenga Kaiako o Aotearoa New Zealand Teachers Council and a reference group of academics, teacher education practitioners and iwi representatives involved in iwi educational initiatives.

The new resource, Te Hāpai Ō - Ko te Whakangungu me te Arataki i ngā wāhi Mātauranga Māori / Induction and Mentoring in Māori-medium Settings, provides a model of support for provisionally registered teachers in kura, wharekura and other Māori-medium settings.  Te Hāpai Ō was developed by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi as part of the Council's Induction and Mentoring Pilot Programme.
