New Zealand Teachers Council Research Projects
The New Zealand Teachers Council commissions research to provide an evidence base that will inform the policies and standards that strengthen the quality of the teaching profession.
The following projects focus on several key areas in the profession:
Projects include the Induction and Mentoring Pilot Programme which trialled the Council's Guidelines for Induction and Mentoring and Mentor Teachers. This was preceded by a three stage Learning to Teach research programme.
This project has updated the criteria that all teachers in New Zealand will be required to meet to gain and maintain full registration. An overarching registration policy is also under development.
Currently there is a review of the processes and requirements for approval and reapproval of initial teacher education programmes. This project began with a joint research programme between the Council and Ministry of Education on current initial teacher education programmes in New Zealand.
This project is investigating issues in the initial teacher education programmes that prepare teachers for Māori medium settings in schools and early childhood education.
This project investigated and is promoting leadership in early childhood education settings. The first stage is a discussion paper investigating how leadership is conceptualised in the early childhood education sector in New Zealand.
A joint research project between the Council and the Ministry of Education investigated the status of teachers and perceptions of teaching in New Zealand. This project, completed in 2005-2006, was conducted to guide policy development and for use in future benchmarking.
