What is a Practising Certificate?

Registered teachers in New Zealand are issued with a three year practising certificate.  To maintain this, a teacher must satisfy all of the relevant requirements stipulated in the Education Act 1989. The New Zealand Teachers Council suggests that employing authorities should have procedures to regularly check the validity of the practising certificates for their staff.

When does a Practising Certificate expire?

Practising certificates expire three years from the date of issue. The New Zealand Teachers Council will endeavour to notify the teacher within three months of expiry, using the contact details most recently supplied by the teacher.  You can use the Online Register to check the expiry date of your practising certificate.
