Teacher Registration Categories

There are three categories of teacher registration in New Zealand:

Provisionally registered teachers are (usually) newly qualified teachers who have not yet had sufficient teaching experience to demonstrate that they meet all of the Registered Teacher Criteria.  They need to be completing a broad-based programme of induction and mentoring over two years in order to gain full registration.

Teachers who are registered subject to confirmation are experienced teachers who have previously met all of the Registered Teacher Criteria, but have not been able to be assessed as meeting them recently.  This is usually because they have not had sufficient recent teaching experience, or their teaching has been too part time or too casual for a meaningful assessment to have been made by their professional leader.

Fully registered teachers are experienced teachers who have completed satisfactory recent teaching experience, and have recently been assessed as meeting all of the Registered Teacher Criteria.

Section Two, Part B of the Registration Policy provides further, more detailed information about the requirements for each category of registration.
