Frequently Asked Questions about Graduating Teacher Standards

What are the main implications of the Graduating Teacher Standards?

The Graduating Teacher Standards ensure that there is an agreed national standard that graduating teachers have to meet. These standards apply to all graduates whether they will be teaching in a school or early childhood centre, including all Māori medium settings.  The Graduating Teacher Standards are included as part of the Council's definition of 'satisfactorily trained to teach'.

Teacher education providers will have to demonstrate that new teaching programmes, and those for which they're seeking re-approval, will enable graduates to meet the Graduating Teacher Standards if they are to gain approval to run the programmes.

What does this mean for students?

The standards describe what you need to achieve to qualify as a teacher and enable you to apply for provisional registration.  The standards describe what you will know, understand and be able to do, and the dispositions you will have that are likely to make you an effective teacher.  For information about how the Graduating Teacher Standards apply to your particular programme, contact your programme administrator.

What does this mean for Initial Teacher Education Providers?

Since January 2008, you have to show that new teaching programmes align with the Graduating Teacher Standards if you are to gain approval to run the programmes. If you are submitting a programme for re-approval, you will have to ensure it aligns with the Graduating Teacher Standards.

What does this mean for Principals, Head Teachers, Centre Managers and Employers?

You will have a clear set of standards on which to base your expectations of new graduates.

What does this mean for Associate Teachers and Supervisors?

During practicum, you will assess teaching students on competencies that are aligned with the Graduating Teacher Standards.
